Want to know the fastest way to expose weaknesses in your Korean pronunciation? Say 간장공장 공장장 three times, fast.
Tongue twisters — 잰말놀이 (jaen-mal-nori) in Korean — are how Korean broadcasters, actors, and singers train their articulation. For learners, they’re a cheat code: 30 seconds of practice targets exactly the sounds English speakers merge, and they force Korean sound-change rules to become automatic.
Here are 10, ordered from beginner to “even natives struggle.”
Warm-Up: Why These Work
Korean distinguishes three consonant series that English treats as one:
| Plain | Tense | Aspirated |
|---|---|---|
| ㄱ (g) | ㄲ (kk) | ㅋ (k) |
| ㄷ (d) | ㄸ (tt) | ㅌ (t) |
| ㅂ (b) | ㅃ (pp) | ㅍ (p) |
| ㅅ (s) | ㅆ (ss) | — |
| ㅈ (j) | ㅉ (jj) | ㅊ (ch) |
Every tongue twister below hammers one of these contrasts. Read each one out loud three times: slow, medium, fast.
Level 1: Beginner
1. The classic — soy sauce factory
간장공장 공장장은 강 공장장이고, 된장공장 공장장은 공 공장장이다. gan-jang-gong-jang gong-jang-jang-eun gang gong-jang-jang-i-go, doen-jang-gong-jang gong-jang-jang-eun gong gong-jang-jang-i-da

Targets: the ㅅ+ㅡ+ㅟ cluster — deceptively hard at speed.
5. Peeled peach
네가 그린 기린 그림은 목이 긴 기린 그림이고, 내가 그린 기린 그림은 목이 짧은 기린 그림이다. ne-ga geu-rin gi-rin geu-rim-eun mo-gi gin gi-rin geu-rim-i-go, nae-ga geu-rin gi-rin geu-rim-eun mo-gi jjal-beun gi-rin geu-rim-i-da

The famous “moist choco chip” twister — a modern internet classic. Targets ㅊ+ㅋ aspiration (촉촉한 → [촉초칸] via the ㅎ merger).
Level 4: Native-Breaker
10. Dr. Park, the law scholar
저기 계신 저 분이 박 법학박사이시고, 여기 계신 이 분이 백 법학박사이시다. jeo-gi gye-sin jeo bun-i bak beop-hak-bak-sa-i-si-go, yeo-gi gye-sin i bun-i baek beop-hak-bak-sa-i-si-da
That person over there is Dr. Park, doctor of law, and this person here is Dr. Baek, doctor of law.
법학박사 is pronounced [버팍빡싸] — aspiration, then tensification, stacked. If you nail this at speed, record it and post it in a Korean learning community. Seriously.
How to Practice (Without Wrecking Your Accent)
- Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. First pass at 50% speed with perfect sounds. Speed without accuracy just automates mistakes.
- Read, don’t memorize. The point is training your eyes to trigger the right sounds — that’s reading fluency, not recitation.
- One per day. Two minutes each morning. Rotate through all ten weekly.
- Check the sound changes first. Half the difficulty is sound-change rules firing mid-twister. Review the 6 pronunciation rules and each twister gets easier.
Want the same training with instant feedback and adaptive difficulty? The Batchim app turns exactly this kind of drill into a daily 15-minute habit — syllable sprints, sound-change training, and speed tracking included.
